About Us
Formerly known as Students with Disabilities and Chronic Conditions (SWDCC), Disabilities International is an affinity group for students in our Soka community who are disabled, neurodivergent, and/or chronically ill. We have created this space to ensure support to one another and thrive during your time at Soka. Disabled students in academia often face significant challenges in universities, and our ultimate goal is to provide a supportive environment for all of us. Your voice is important, and we aim to help those who need support on campus to succeed not only during their time at Soka but also in life beyond Soka.
One of our goals of Disabilities International is to provide assistance and resources to neurodivergent and disabled students here at Soka. We want to support all disabled students throughout their time here, whether it be with their health, academics, career, study abroad experience, etc...! Many disabled folks exist globally, especially here at Soka University, and disability shouldn't be taboo or hardly discussed. We also want to educate the campus on topics relating to disability and how to support us best. One cannot be a global citizen or give back to one's community if they do not acknowledge that disability is very real and ableism has to be undone and challenged in order for neurodivergent or disabled folks to thrive and succeed as their non-disabled counterparts do.
