We are more alike my friends than we are unalike possesses great wisdom, Residential Life is also committed to honoring and respecting your unique differences, and to supporting your exploration of your uniqueness over the next several years. And there in lies our commitment to you: to help support and guide you through these next formative years that will be among the most exciting, and challenging, of your lives! Living on campus plays an integral part in the overall learning experience for students attending Soka University. Our Residential Life staff play a critical role in developing inclusive, welcoming, and equitable communities to support student success and a quality experience for our residents. Soka is an institution that is fully dedicated to laying a foundation for you to live a truly contributive life. Residential Life Co-Curriculum

  • Self-Authorship & Accountability

    Self-authorship and accountability are a resident's capacity to understand and articulate who they are as it relates to their identities, beliefs, and values. Residents will recognize how internal realities affect the way they live their lives and their understanding of self-responsibility. Residents will:

    1. Articulate their own belief systems and values, and evalute how these beliefs influence their behaviors and character development
    2. Identify their own level of resiliency in different sitatuions and navigate their emotional response to disappointment, adversity, and challenges.
    3. Develop an understadning of and respect for the independence of all living things.
    4. Demosntrate the character to perform informed and resposnible actions to address ethical, social, and environmental challenges.
    5. Recognize their individual and collective power in the commmunity and be agents of positive change.

  • Life Skills

    Life skills focuses on a resident's ability to understand the behaviors and knowledge necessary to effectively navigate life's daily demands which have an impact on their well-being. Residents will develop Life Skills to become active and productive members of their community. Residents will:

    1. Identify and utilize resources for life's daily demands
    2. Develop and implement skills for managing their daily lives
    3. Utilize communication skills to improve relationship building
    4. Demonstrate healthy lifestyle choices that promote wellness and balance
    5. Create value by contributing to their community

  • Equity and Inclusion

    Equity and Inclusion is a resident's developmental process towards global awareness, where residents will develop the capacity to explore and engage in a community with diverse identities and experiences. From this exploration and engagement, residents will learn to use their capacity to advocate and promote equity. Residents will:

    1. Actively listen to the persepctives of their community members in a manner that is respectful of their identities
    2. Recognize the unique experiences that come with the intersections of identities
    3. Share and discuss their own experinces through counter-storytelling*
    4. Establish context and a deeper understanding of the merit in various experiences of residents with different identities
    5. Apply methods of inclusion through the use of learned privileges and agency to help promote equity for all residents

    Counter- storytelling - Writings, tales, scripts, and images that aims to cast doubt on the validity of accepted premises or myths, especially ones held by the majority (Delgado & Stefancic, 2017)
