Academic Opening Session

Thursday, August 10, 2023. 9:30am-12:00pm at the Soka Performing Arts Center

9:30am-10:00am: Academic Overview

Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Michael Weiner will provide an overview of the academic curriculum at Soka, and Registrar Nancy Yoshimura will review degree requirements with students.

10:00am-11:00am: Concentration Discussions with Faculty

  • 10:00am-10:30am: Session #1
  • 10:40am-11:00am: Session #2

In small-group, breakout sessions, students will also have an opportunity to learn more about the five academic concentrations at Soka: Environmental Studies, Humanities, International Studies, Life Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The director of each concentration will host a group discussion for 30 minutes, and students will be able to attend sessions of two concentrations of interest. In the next Brightspace module, please select which concentration groups you would like to attend.

11:10am-12:00pm: Academic Programs

Following the discussion groups, students will reconvene in the Performing Arts Center concert hall to learn about the various academic programs offered at SUA, including Core, Writing, Creative Arts, Math & Sciences, Language & Culture, and Study Abroad programs.
